The 2016 Head of the River Regatta was contested at Lake Barrington on Saturday April 2. This year we saw students from 13 schools competing in various boats throughout the day. Unfortunately the weather conditions were far from favourable for the event which saw multiple events cancelled and the program re-visited several times throughout the day to ensure the safety of competitors was guaranteed. On behalf of SATIS we would like to acknowledge the tireless efforts of all Rowing Tasmania officials both before, during and after the event to allow the day to run as smoothly as possible. They provided expert advice and direction regarding all decisions related to keeping crews on or off the water throughout the day and their knowledge and professionalism was greatly valued.
After a modified program was run it was decided the majority of shields could not be awarded because of a lack of racing to allow accurate compilation of scores and overall results. Thankfully four of the main feature races were still rowed and the crowd remained to cheer on all competing crews.
The Friend School were victorious in the Girls U16 Eight with The Hutchins School coming out on top in the Boys U16 Eight.
The Girls Open Head of the River event was won convincingly by The Friends School with a very strong performance to beat Launceston Church Grammar School over the line with Fahan School in third place.
In the Boys Open Head of the River event, The Hutchins School retained the trophy from 2015 with a strong performance to take victory from the Friends School with Scotch Oakburn College in third place.
All competitors, supporters, parents and staff must be congratulated for the way they supported each other throughout the day. A lot of time and effort goes into preparing for this event and it would not be possible nor successful every year without the contributions of all involved.
We are already looking forward to a flat lake for the 2017 event!
